Tracked assets (Bluetooth beacons)

How Yipii finds equipment that carries a Bluetooth beacon: the last gateway that heard it, where that was, and what Live, Seen recently and Quiet mean.

You put a Bluetooth beacon on a child's car seat, a trolley or a generator, and want to know where it was last. Assets → Tracked assets is that list.

What it is

A beacon has no GPS and no SIM card. It sends out a short radio signal, and any of your trackers close enough to hear it — a gateway — reports it along with its own position.

So a beacon's location is where the gateway was when it last heard it. It works like hearing someone call your name: you know they were within earshot, and where you were standing when you heard it.

How to read it

Assets → Tracked assets lists each beacon with these columns:

  1. Last gateway — the vehicle whose tracker last heard the beacon. If that tracker is not on one of your assets, its IMEI shows instead.
  2. Last location — where that gateway was at the time.
  3. Status — how long ago a gateway last heard it, in words:
StatusMeans
LiveA gateway heard it in the last 15 minutes. It is with that vehicle now.
Seen recentlyHeard in the last 24 hours, and out of a gateway's range right now. Normal.
QuietNot heard for over a day. Normal for equipment left out of a gateway's range.
Not seen yetNo gateway has picked it up yet.

None of these is a fault, and none is shown in red. Battery reads in volts or as a percentage, depending on the beacon. Signal is in dBm: the nearer to 0, the closer the beacon was to the gateway.

For example, a beacon on a folding wheelchair reads last gateway Hotel Shuttle 1, at Sliema, 1 hr ago, −80 dBm. The wheelchair was in or beside Hotel Shuttle 1 an hour ago, at Sliema, and it reads Seen recently.

What Yipii does with it

The same words — Live, Seen recently, Quiet — show on the asset's panel, in the beacon's details and in its pop-up on the map. A beacon out of range stays in the list; nothing is removed for going quiet.

Beacons are registered under Assets → Tags, not here. This list shows only beacons registered against an asset.

What you should do

  • Live or Seen recently — nothing. Use Last gateway to find which vehicle has it.
  • Quiet — nothing, if it is meant to be parked. If it should be moving with a vehicle, check that vehicle's tracker can read beacons, and the beacon's Battery.
  • Not seen yet — no tracker has heard it. Put it inside a vehicle whose tracker reads beacons and drive it, then check again.
  • Beacons and tags — register a beacon and turn on beacon reading for a tracker.
  • Assets — where Tracked assets and Tags sit in the Assets menu.
